So, you’ve committed to your New Year’s resolution and growing your locs long and now you want to make sure you do it right. The first way to go is naturally and nutritiously, but you probably already knew that. There are some useful tricks out there to encourage new growth, but the most important tip is to keep yourself, yes your whole self, healthy, so you see positive results all around, not just up on your scalp or down along your locs. Here are a few tips to promote long and luxurious locs.

Tip #1 Don’t Over Twist

There are times when twisting is necessary and then there are those times where you don’t even realize you have been twisting your locs for the past 15 minutes. It’s important to get into a valuable twisting routine, if of course you’ve started with the twists and not palm rolling. If you inattentively twists your locs while reading, checking your email, or over indulging on Netflix try sitting on your hands, but more realistically, try to pay more attention and make the effort to break the habit, as they they, “Where there’s a will, there’s a way,” whoever the they is.

Tip #2 Keep Your Locs Tucked Away While You Sleep

Find a head covering that works for you and your locs while you sleep. Make sure it’s not made of cotton to reduce or eliminate any unnecessary lint, dust, or any other flying particle that likes to nestle in your locs. Cotton may also dry out your locs and scalp, so it’s unquestionably a fabric you want to avoid when possible. In general, you should keep your locs covered in a satin or silk head covering when you know you will be in a dusty environment, to avoid any additional risks.

Tip #3 Your Diet Matters

Looking for another reason to commit to a healthy diet this year? Well, here you have it. A diet rich in Vitamin E and A will boost hair growth, not to mention all of the other healthy benefits they will have on your skin and nails. Foods rich in Vitamin E are, Almonds, Spinach, Sunflower Seeds, Avocado and Wheat Germ. Wheat Germ you can find in whole grain breads and cereals. You can naturally increase your vitamin A intake with carrots, broccoli, kale, spinach, and beef liver. Sweet potato contains both vitamin A and E. Eating the above listed veggies raw drastically increases the amount of vitamins your body gets to enjoy. That’s where a juicer comes in handy, but an extra large organic salad should never be overlooked. Bonus Tip: Add a small spoon of Flaxseed oil for those Omega-3 fatty acids that strengthen hair follicles.

Tip #4 Scalp Massage Anyone?

Just so were clear, were not offering the scalp massage here, we’re recommending it. If you or your significant other lover is trying to go for the long grow, exchanging scalp massages is one nice and pleasurable way to stimulate hair growth. A proper scalp massage will increase blood flow to your scalp which will stimulate your hair follicles for faster growth. In the case where you’re loving your independence, then all is good, because you can just go the DIY route, with pride and pleasure..

Tip #5 Stick to Nature

Make sure the products you are using to twist, loc and clean your hair are all natural products and not filled with unnecessary junk that will cause build-up in your locs. Many unnatural products may also dry out your locs and scalp causing more unnecessary breakage and frizz. Sometimes these products smell, work, and look great in the beginning and later lead to irreparable damage. Natural products will encourage healthy and long lasting hair growth.

Grow with love.
